Resin Bound pathways for London hospital garden

A new landscaped garden and seating area has been created for St George’s Hospital in Tooting, London, thanks to funding from the Trust, St George’s Hospital Charity and Together charity, and with the help of fundraising completed by Sir Captain Tom Moore in 2020.

Surfacing requirements

Main contractor Bowles & Wyer created a new design for the Wellbeing Garden providing a green peaceful space within the hospital grounds and bringing both staff, patients and visitors closer to nature.

The new landscaped areas comprise of a formal seating area just outside the hospital entrance and a more secluded seating area surrounded by lush green planting. The paving for the seating areas and paths needed to be slip resistant, low maintenance, comfortable underfoot and provide the decorative look of natural aggregate surfacing.

Addagrip approved contractor Graveltech Driveway Solutions Ltd was appointed to install a decorative, porous, resin bound gravel paving with a large stone finish to give a more rustic looking surface. Terrabase Rustic was recommended which can be installed onto a compacted MOT Type 3 base with minimum disruption and offers excellent porosity. A natural looking Rustic Beach blend was selected to complement the wooden benches and planters, providing a slip resistant surface that requires little maintenance.

The schedule was tight but work was completed in time for the big reveal on national television on Tuesday 8 December 2020 on ITV’s Lorraine, by TV presenter Lorraine Kelly.
