Work has recently been completed on Phase 1 of the new flood defence scheme in Exeter which will reduce the flood risk to homes and businesses in the area.
The Trew’s flood relief channel and the side spill weir at the top of the channel have both been lowered to increase the flow capacity of the flood relief channel, which will help reduce flood risk during high river flows. The project, managed by the Environment Agency with support from project partners Exeter City Council and Devon County Council, was split into 2 phases and Addagrip approved contractor, iDream Solutions were approached regarding the surfacing options for the pedestrian walkways in Phase 1.
Surfacing requirements
The client wanted a rustic looking aggregate product to blend in with the natural environment, which would be hard wearing and could withstand the floods. After examining a number of surfacing options, it was decided that Terrabase Rustic resin bound surfacing with its 6-10mm aggregate blend was the right solution for this scheme, especially as it could be installed directly onto an MOT Type 3 base without the need for an invasive asphalt or concrete base.
iDream Solutions installed over 300m2 of Terrabase Rustic in a Gold blend to create natural looking, hard wearing porous pathways which would allow pedestrian access and withstand potential flooding.
The client was delighted with the finish. Phase 1 is now substantially complete and construction of phase 2 is due to start summer 2016.
